MAP NOTES
What to take with you
- A kanji may have more than one reading
- Learn a character inside useful words and sentences
- Review recognition and recall as separate skills
One character is not one sound
Many kanji have multiple readings. 生 appears in 学生, 先生, and 生まれる with different readings. Memorizing a single sound for each character creates confusion later.
Store kanji inside a word
When you meet 駅, record the word 駅 (えき), its meaning, and a sentence such as 駅で 会いましょう. Add one visual feature or component that helps you recognize the shape.
Separate reading from writing
You may need to recognize a kanji long before you can write it from memory. Practice reading signs and short messages, then add handwriting for the words you actually need.
Review by retrieval
Look at the kanji and recall the word. Then listen to or read the word in kana and recall the kanji. These two directions train different skills. Keep the review set small enough to use accurately.
