MAP NOTES

What to take with you

  • Learn reusable sentence frames rather than isolated words
  • Pair each phrase with the situation where you need it
  • Use すみません to open a request, question, or apology politely
01

Begin with a polite opening

すみません is a useful way to get attention, make a small apology, or begin a request. It does not carry exactly the same meaning in every situation, so notice the tone and what follows.

02

Ask where something is

Use X は どこですか to ask where a place or object is. Replace X with トイレ, 出口, or 市役所. Keep the particle は with the item you are asking about.

03

Ask for help or repetition

もう一度 お願いします asks for something one more time. ゆっくり お願いします asks the person to speak slowly. These phrases help you stay in the conversation instead of pretending to understand.

04

Confirm before you act

Use X で いいですか to check whether an option is acceptable. This pattern is useful for time, place, documents, and payment methods. Confirmation is a practical communication skill, not a sign of failure.
