MAP NOTES
What to take with you
- Reliable です/ます communication comes before complex keigo
- A request needs the task, timing, and any necessary context
- Repeat dates, numbers, and responsibilities to prevent misunderstandings
Make clarity your first form of politeness
Workplace Japanese is not only a list of honorific replacements. A calm です/ます sentence with a clear subject, task, and deadline is often more useful than advanced keigo used incorrectly.
Use a request frame
〜を お願いできますか is a polite way to ask whether someone can do something. Add the object and timing: この資料を 今日中に 確認していただけますか. The relationship and workplace culture affect the best level of politeness.
Acknowledge without pretending
承知しました means that you have understood and accepted something. If part is unclear, follow with a specific question instead of acknowledging everything.
Confirm action and deadline
End important exchanges by restating who will do what and by when. For example, では、わたしが 金曜日までに 送ります. Clear confirmation protects both sides.
