MAP NOTES

What to take with you

  • The 2024 survey report was released on March 26, 2026 after a correction notice
  • All four headline measures reached record highs in the institutional survey
  • Learn how 増加, 過去最多, 調査, and 訂正 frame statistical news
01

What was announced

On March 26, 2026, the Japan Foundation published the full Japanese report and data tables for its 2024 Survey on Japanese-Language Education Abroad. The Foundation says the number of institutions, teachers, learners, and countries or regions offering institutional Japanese-language education all reached record highs.

02

Read the date carefully

The survey describes conditions during fiscal 2024, while the full report was published in 2026. A March 13, 2026 notice also records corrections to some material. This distinction matters: a survey year, a release date, and a correction date answer different questions.

03

The cultural lens

Japanese learning happens through schools, universities, community programs, online resources, work, migration, media, and personal relationships. The headline suggests wider international contact with Japanese language and culture, but it does not mean every country grew in the same way. Country-level tables are needed before making a local claim.

04

Japanese for reading statistical news

過去最多(かこさいた) means “the highest on record.” 増加(ぞうか) means an increase, while 調査(ちょうさ) is a survey or investigation. 訂正(ていせい) tells readers that published information was corrected. These words help you separate the claim, the evidence, and later changes.

05

What to check next

English Atlas will revisit this brief when the Foundation publishes a newer survey, revised tables, or a material correction. Learners researching a specific country should use the official country and region data rather than applying the global headline locally.
