MAP NOTES

What to take with you

  • Japanese animated films are known to have been publicly shown in 1917
  • The oldest Japanese animated film currently available to view is The Dull Sword from June 1917
  • Early creators tested cutout, paper, drawing, and cel techniques rather than following one fixed method
  • Silent animation was experienced with live narrators and music, so the screening itself shaped the work
01

Anime history begins before television

The National Film Archive of Japan marks 1917 as the year Japanese animated films were first publicly shown. Records suggest that an animated film appeared in January, but that work has not been confirmed as surviving. The oldest Japanese animated film currently available to view is なまくら刀, The Dull Sword, released in June 1917.

02

“The first” needs a complete sentence

Earliest produced, earliest released, earliest surviving, and earliest viewable are different claims. An archive can only preserve what has been found, identified, and made accessible. When a new film or document appears, the map may change. Strong historical writing states the category and the evidence rather than repeating a dramatic “first ever” label.

03

Early animation used many techniques

アニメ is the everyday shortened form of アニメーション. 動画(どうが) historically names moving pictures and also appears in the language of animation production. Early Japanese creators experimented with paper cutouts, drawings, chiyogami paper, and later cel methods. The archive’s collection shows that technical history was not a straight line from primitive to complete.

04

A silent film was not a silent event

Early screenings could include live music and a 弁士(べんし), a narrator who explained and performed films for the audience. This means the same moving images could feel different according to the venue and performance. 映画(えいが) is film, 上映(じょうえい) is screening, and 観客(かんきゃく) is the audience.

05

Production words reveal collaboration

監督(かんとく) is the director. 作画(さくが) refers to drawing or animation work, while 原作(げんさく) is the original work on which an adaptation is based. 声優(せいゆう) is a voice actor. Modern credits divide labor among many people and companies. Reading them prevents the director from becoming the only author in the story.

06

The archive is part of the history

The Japanese Animated Film Classics project digitizes and presents films with information about creators and techniques. Preservation includes locating material, repairing and scanning it, identifying dates and credits, and explaining uncertainty. Watching an old film online is therefore also an encounter with contemporary archival work.
