The setting is historical; the organization is fictional
The official anime story places the opening in Japan’s Taisho period, 1912–1926. Tanjiro sells charcoal before his family is attacked and Nezuko becomes a demon. Clothing, transport, occupations, and townscapes can encourage historical questions, but 鬼殺隊(きさつたい), the Demon Slayer Corps, is a fictional organization. Use Taisho archives for real social history.
Family words drive the opening
家族(かぞく) means family, 兄(あに) is one’s older brother, and 妹(いもうと) is one’s younger sister. 守る(まもる) can mean to protect, keep, or obey, depending on its object: a person, a promise, a rule, or a deadline. A translation should show what is being protected rather than assigning one English word automatically.
鬼 is older and wider than this series
鬼(おに) appears in folklore, religion, performance, festivals, children’s games, idioms, and modern fiction. English “demon” is a practical title translation, but it does not capture every historical use. Demon Slayer creates particular bodies, powers, and rules for 鬼; those rules should not be generalized to every Japanese story or belief.
Ordinary words acquire special meanings
呼吸(こきゅう) ordinarily means breathing. 柱(はしら) ordinarily means a pillar or supporting post. In the series, both terms enter a fictional combat and rank system. Mark title-specific senses clearly so learners can still recognize the everyday words in a hospital instruction, building description, or common phrase.
Production is collaborative
The official credits identify Gotouge Koyoharu’s manga as the source, Sotozaki Haruo as director, and ufotable as animation producer, alongside many other roles. “The author made the anime” hides adaptation, writing, design, animation, sound, performance, and production. A precise guide credits the medium being discussed.
Global reach needs a named event
The official portal says the 2024 world tour screening reached more than 145 countries and regions. That figure belongs to a specific tour and year. It does not count all viewers or establish a permanent global ranking. Use it to discuss organized international release, then investigate local access separately.
